Pendle Cyclefest win's 'Best Sporting Moments' Award
The Pendle Cyclefest has been named one of the area's
Best Sporting Moments at this year's Pendle Sports
Awards.
The awards, organised by Pendle Leisure Trust in
partnership with East Lancashire Newspapers, celebrated
sporting achievements, dedicated coaches and rising
stars.
And the Sporting Moment award recognised the success
of the Pendle Cyclefest, a summer-long celebration of
cycling.
Mark Sandamas from Pennine Events
who worked with the Council to organise the
Cyclefest, said:
It's fantastic that our hard has been recognised
through this award.
"It was a challenging event to deliver, but we felt
proud of putting on a new benchmark event as far as the
National Championships go and helping show the country
what a wonderful place Pendle is."
Brian Cookson, Executive Director at Pendle Council
and President of British Cycling:
"Through the Cyclefest we aim to promote cycling as a
leisure time activity for all the family and a great way
of keeping fit.
"In Pendle we're blessed with some stunning
countryside that, we believe, can be seen best by bike.
"This year's Cyclefest brought the National Road Race
Championships to Barley village and the surrounding
area.
"On a sweltering hot weekend in June, all eyes were on
Pendle as almost 200 elite male and female cyclists
battled it out for the national jerseys.
"It certainly was a sporting moment that the cycling
world and Pendle people will remember for a long time to
come."

Councillor Jonathan Eyre,
who represents tourism in Pendle, added:
"The National Road Race Championships certainly
helped to put Pendle on the map as a superb destination
for cyclists and other visitors.
"We've always known what a beautiful place Pendle is.
Now thanks to the television coverage of the National
Road Race, thousands, possibly millions, more know it
too!"
Phil Storey, Chief Executive of Pendle Leisure Trust
was on the judging panel for the awards. He said:
"The National Road Race Championship was such an easy
award to choose. It was the biggest sporting event to
happen in Pendle for many a year.
"And the fact it was held around the beautiful
countryside of Pendle was always a headline winner!"
